Ceremony of Spirit: Nature and Memory in Contemporary Latino Art December 8, 1993 - February 20, 1994
Ceremony of Spirit investigated aspects of spirituality in nature and memory as represented in the works of sixteen artists of Mexican, Latino, and Caribbean ancestry living in the United States. In this exhibition, spirituality was positioned as the ultimate act of resistance against cultural domination.
Curated by Dr. Amalia Mesa-Bains, the exhibition was the second of a series of exhibitions that examined issues in contemporary art. The series, entitled Redefining the Aesthetic: Toward a New Vision of American Culture, was sponsored by the Lila Wallace-Reader's Digest Fund. Ceremony of Spirit traveled nationwide for two years.
The Catalogue for Ceremony of Spirit includes over 24 color plates with essays from Curator Amalia Mesa-Bains, scholars Victor Zamudio-Taylor and Arturo Lindsay.
