In the Spirit of Resistance: African-American Modernists and the Mexican Muralist School
February 27, 1998 - April 26, 1998

In the Spirit of Resistance illustrated the profound influence of the Mexican muralists and printmakers of the Taller de Gráfica Popular (Popular Graphic Workshop) on eight African-American artists working from the 1920s though 1950s. The exhibition explored how both groups created art in reaction to the social, economic and political conditions of their societies, making powerful statements against oppression in their work. The exhibition featured over 100 works, including sketches for murals, easel paintings, prints and sculpture.

Curated by Lizzetta LeFalle-Collins, the exhibition was organized by The American Federation of Arts in association with The Mexican Museum and The Studio Museum of Harlem.
