Daniel Lezama was born in Mexico City on August 10, 1968, of Mexican-American parents. He studied Visual Arts at Mexico’s National University from 1993 to 1997. He earned the acquisition prize in the Tenth Rufino Tamayo Biennale (2001). He has been sponsored several times by both the National Endowment for the Arts sponsorship for Young Artists, and the National Creators System sponsorship program, in Mexico. His 2008 early mid-career exhibition, “The Prodigal Mother” in the Mexico City Museum, was marked by the publication of an extensive monograph on his work by Hilario Galguera Ediciones. In 2011, the exhibition Travelers is published by Jovis Art in Germany. Other more recent monographs include Trees of Tamoanchan and The Soft Motherland. To date, he has shown in more than a hundred individual and collective exhibitions in his record, including Great Masters of the 20th Century in MARCO Museum, the 2nd Beijing Biennale, The Myth of Two Volcanoes, at the Mexican Palace of Fine Arts, Imperium at the Leipzig Spinnerei, Images of the Nation at MUNAL, the centerpiece of the Mexican Pavilion in the Milan Univeral Exhibition, and the Xth Mercosul Biennale in Porto Alegre, 2015. Lezama's works are represented in numberless private and public collections in Mexico and the rest of the world, including the Mexican Museum of Modern Art, Damien Hirst’s Murderme Collection, The Museo del Barrio in NYC, the Dallas Museum of Art, the Essl Sammlung, and the Black Coffee Foundation. A public figure, Lezama has also played the role of juror, curator, and tutor of younger generations of visual artists. He currently lives in Cuernavaca.
Semblanza
Daniel Lezama nace en la Ciudad de México en 1968, hijo de padres mexicano-americanos. Es egresado de la Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas de la UNAM de 1993 a 1997. En 2001 gana el Premio de Adquisición de la X Bienal Tamayo. Ha sido acreedor a apoyos del FONCA y del CONACULTA en múltiples ocasiones. En 2008 expone la retrospectiva temprana “La Madre Pródiga” en el Museo de la Ciudad de México, con motivo de la cual se publica una monografía a gran escala de su trabajo en Hilario Galguera Ediciones. En 2011 presenta “Cartas de Viaje” en la Galería Hilario Galguera, acompañado de la publicación del libro Travelers por parte de la Editorial Jovis Art en Alemania. Se han publicado más recientemente otras monografías de su obra como Arboles de Tamoanchan (Vaso Roto Ediciones), y La Suave Matria (Conaculta). A la fecha ha participado en más de un centenar de exhibiciones individuales y colectivas, de las que destacan “Grandes Maestros del Siglo XX” en el Museo MARCO, la “2nda Bienal de Beijing”, “El Mito de Dos Volcanes” en el Palacio de Bellas Artes, “Imperium” en el Spinnerei de Leipzig, e “Imágenes de la Patria”, en el MUNAL y Territorios de la Memoria, en el MAM, la pieza representativa del Pabellón de México en la Exposición Universal de Milán, y la X Bienal de Mercosul en 2015. Su obra forma parte de numerosas colecciones públicas y privadas en México y el mundo, entre las que destacan el acervo MAM del INBA, La Murderme Collection de Damien Hirst, El Museo del Barrio en NY, el Dallas Museum of Art, la Essl Sammlung y Black Coffee Foundation. Asimismo, ha incursionado en el medio artístico mexicano como líder de opinión, jurado, curador y tutor de jóvenes generaciones de artistas plásticos. Actualmente vive en Cuernavaca.
